Use of the word "wallahi"

A lot of the Muslim students at Ridgemont use the word “wallahi” (I swear by Allah) on a daily basis when it’s completely unnecessary. They use it so often that even non-Muslim teachers are starting to use it just for a laugh. The Muslim students need to realize that they should only be using this word if they really need others to believe what they are saying. Walking down the hallways and hearing teachers say “wallahi” in the middle of their sentences because they constantly hear the Muslim students saying it isn’t really pleasant.

Muslim Students and Administration

For the most part, the Ridgemont staff members are helpful, kind and treat all their students equally. But, if you put that set of staff aside, you will still find that some administration (office staff, librarians, etc) treat the Muslim students differently – they put us in a lower position and treat us unfairly.

The Muslim students, just like all the other students in the school, come to learn. When we have a problem and ask the administration for help, we expect them to treat us the way they treat other students.

Ottawa Allah Made Me Funny Event a Resounding Success!

Allah Made Me Funny- The Official Comedy Tour came was in town on Friday the 21st, and created a truly enjoyable, sold-out event that left Ottawa talking for days!

The event, presented by the Muslim Youth of Ottawa and the Keepin’ it Halal group on Facebook, in partnership with Radio Islam, combined many members of the community into the Travelodge hotel for a night of roll-off-the-floor laughing.

The tour, featuring three of America’s top Muslim comics: Mohammed Amer, Azhar Usman and Preacher Moss, provoked un-stoppable laughter from the whole audience- consisting of youth and adults of all ages, and special RCMP guests.

The event started off with an enthusiastic MC, Iman Faris, who had the audience screaming Eid Mubarak the minute the event started. He was followed by spoken word poetry from Sophia Baig, a nationally acknowledged spoken word poet.

Peer pressure is a constant, almost consistently negative influence in the life of any person. For Muslims especially, it can be a force that is extremely difficult to grapple with. Being so visibly and behaviourally distinct from others can create many social impediments for Muslims, as well as a desire to "fit in" better. This desire to fit in and conform can take many forms in the school setting; skipping classes, partying, drinking, being a bystander etc. During the holiday season especially, Muslims may find themselves facing this sort of pressure.

Jummuahs at Ridgemont

Ridgemont’s Jumuahs are held at the prayer room in the school basement.  Most of the time, the room is full with around 40 brothers and 15 sisters. It’s nice seeing the room packed, but wouldn’t it be more pleasurable to be praying in a bigger room with more brothers and sisters when over half the school is Muslim?
